Resoling climbing shoes is an essential step to extend their lifespan and ensure optimal performance during your climbing sessions. Over time and with use, the sole rubber wears down, leading to a loss of grip and efficiency. It is important to monitor the condition of the sole as well as the rubber rand, so you can resole your pairs at the right time and avoid irreversible damage. Regular resoling of your climbing shoes ensures better grip and extends the longevity of your shoes.
Resoling involves replacing the worn rubber with a new layer of Vibram or a specific rubber compound, restoring your shoes’ original grip and extending their long-term use. Whether you own a pair of Sportiva, Scarpa, or another renowned brand, resoling is crucial to maintain the performance of your climbing shoes.
Galoche & Patin offers a service tailored to your needs: we collect your climbing shoes in Paris and throughout France. Whether you have a specific pair such as Sportiva or Scarpa, there is no longer any need to travel or wait several weeks to benefit from a resole. In just a few clicks, you register the shoes to be resoled, and they are handled in our workshop before being delivered back to you directly at home or to the location of your choice. We also work in partnership with several climbing gyms, making it possible to organize group deliveries for climbers.
Regularly monitor the condition of your soles and the rand on your shoes to anticipate wear. Ideally, you should resole your shoes before the rand is damaged. The rand, the thin piece of rubber around the toe of the shoe, plays a crucial role in support and precision when climbing. If you notice that the rand is worn or that there is a hole in the sole, it will also need to be replaced during resoling to ensure optimal grip.
Some brands such as Simond, Sportiva, and Scarpa have integrated a wear indicator on specific models, allowing you to easily identify the ideal time for resoling. This indicator is located in the original rand and disappears after resoling. Using a professional resoler ensures precise sole replacement and maintains the performance of your climbing shoes.

A climbing shoe can be resoled up to three times while remaining effective, provided the other parts are not too damaged.
The types of rubber recommended for resoling a climbing shoe include Vibram XS Edge, XS Grip, XS Grip 2, Stealth C4, Daytona, Optima, OptimaX, Red Rubber, and Spider. Each rubber offers a different balance between grip and durability, suited to various climbing styles and personal preferences.
A simple resole replaces only the worn sole, while a complete rand repair also includes replacing the rubber layer surrounding the lower part of the shoe, which is necessary if the rand is damaged. This improves both protection and durability.
Resoling your shoes yourself can be cost-effective, but it requires specific skills. The disadvantages include often lower quality and the risk of damage. By contrast, entrusting resoling to a professional offers guaranteed quality, but at a higher cost.
