Maintaining your leather bag

Leather bags are put to the test every day: placed on the floor, subjected to friction, and exposed to light. These external stressors cause the bag’s leather to become dull and lose its flexibility. Here is our advice for keeping your leather bag in good condition.

Our first tip is to store your bag away from light in a dry, temperate place. Ideally, keep it in a fabric dust bag to protect it and prevent it from fading due to light exposure.

The second step you can follow is to regularly apply a special leather lotion to nourish the material and prevent it from losing its flexibility.

Cleaning your leather bag

When you carry your bag daily, stains can sometimes appear on the leather. It is often difficult to know which product to use to remove them.

First, you can give the leather a quick brush to remove dust. To remove stains, we recommend using a special glycerin leather soap. To do this, use a cloth or a soft brush and apply a few drops of glycerin soap mixed with water. Then, gently rub the stained areas.

Afterward, we recommend using a special leather lotion to deeply nourish the leather. Use a cloth and apply the product over the entire bag. Nourishing your bag’s leather is the essential step to keeping it in good condition.

In case of very stubborn stains, you can choose a more radical solution: dyeing your bag.

Entrusting your bag to a leather goods specialist

Despite our advice, your bag may still get damaged and/or not return to its original state. In these cases, you can turn to a leather goods specialist.

For example, when there are far too many stains and the leather has lost its color, it is possible to dye your bag partially or completely in its original color or another color of your choice. Partially dyeing your bag involves working on the corners and edges, which are often the most damaged areas.

At Galoche & Patin, we have the expertise required to dye your bag, as well as to clean it. Whether it’s a grained leather, smooth leather, or suede bag, our experts can clean your leather bag so that it regains its shine and flexibility.
